Responsible & Resilient: Canurta in your Community

Updated: Apr 19, 2023

Letter from our CEO

I am writing to you today as the CEO of our company in the biotech and agricultural industries. I understand that there may be some concerns regarding our presence in the community and the potential impact that we may have on your daily lives. I want to assure you that we are fully committed to being a good neighbour and respectful member of the community.

At Canurta, we believe in the power of rare botanicals to change lives and make a positive impact on the world. We also understand that for this to happen, it is essential for us to earn the trust and respect of the communities where we operate. That is why we take our responsibility as a neighbour very seriously.

I want to give my assurance that we do not grow cannabis, produce THC products or serve the recreational cannabis market. Our focus is only grain crops, including industrial hemp, which is a legal and regulated crop with many beneficial uses, including textiles, health foods and building materials. Our operations will be conducted with the utmost respect for the community and its way of life.

We also understand that every community is unique and has its own traditions, customs, and ways of doing things. As such, we want to learn from you and understand your needs and expectations. We believe that by working together, we can build a relationship based on mutual respect and a shared goal of making the community a better place for all.

In conclusion, I want to emphasize that we are here to be a pillar in the community, to bring economic opportunities, and to learn from and uplift the spirit of the community. We will not carry on without respect and dignity for the community and its way of life. We are eager to work with you to build a bright, resilient and healthy future together.

Sincerely,

Akeem Gardner

Founder & CEO, Canurta Inc.

Who is Canurta?

Canurta’s vision is to reverse the global rise in chronic disease with natural solutions that transform preventative health and patient safety. Our research and technology unlocks the significant anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-cancer and neuroprotective potential of rare, plant polyphenols.

Most widespread therapeutics won’t eliminate the source of disease and can be responsible for long-term side effects. We aspire to improve health outcomes, promote longevity and pull humans and animals out of the cycle of chronic disease.

Shared Community

Grimsby is our home. In sharing a community, we understand the importance of being a good neighbour.

We’re committed to fostering a coactive and comfortable environment for everyone by doing our part:

  • Zero outdoor cultivation of marijuana or indoor cultivation of odiferous crops with a planned Odour Control Study to validate

  • Omission of greenhouse activities which could cause light pollution or otherwise disrupt nighttime ambience

  • Ensure noise control and energy efficiency through state-of-theart equipment and building design, including hemp insulation, which offers superior thermal and soundabsorption properties

  • Prioritize outreach and accessibility for Grimsby’s general and aging populations

  • Pursue philanthropic initiatives that matter most to Grimsby such as the development of WLMH

  • Protect and enhance Grimsby’s distinct natural setting to address climate change by minimizing our ecological footprint and improving the resiliency of our land’s natural environments

  • Prioritize local procurement and job recruitment in manufacturing, health and sciences for underrepresented populations and youth

  • Proactively engage with and listen to the voices of residents

  • Offer transparency into business and operational activities through update reports, town hall meetings and via our online community

  • Establish relationships with local academic and health institutions to advance domestic innovation and leadership

  • Hold educational and skills development events focused on key themes such as workforce advancement and entrepreneurship

What are Polyphenols?

Polyphenols are a group of powerful antioxidants found widely in plant-based foods including fruits, vegetables, nuts, wines, teas and juices. Chances are, you’re consuming these mighty molecules every day and reaping their benefits without even knowing it — think resveratrol found in red grapes or catechin found in green tea. Polyphenols are responsible for the “super” in these “superfoods”. In nature, they play a primary protective role in the face of environmental stressors. So, it’s no surprise that when humans and animals consume them in their diets, they induce protective characteristics that lead to good health.

With the growing need for natural alternatives to alleviate safety concerns with pharmaceuticals, polyphenols are the next big thing. Our groundbreaking research continues to unearth the therapeutic potential of these molecules that can help address a spectrum of chronic diseases ranging from arthritis to Alzheimer’s.

Our Ingredients

Activated Seed Powder

When seeds are activated, their nutritional value instantly increases; antinutrient levels lower; and the production of polyphenols begins. By subsequently powdering these seeds, we’re able to preserve their nutritional content to offer a naturally-balanced and nutrient-dense blend that is superior to conventional, non-activated seeds - with the added benefits of polyphenols.

Polyphenol Extract

Polyphenol Extract is a concentrated, all-natural solution that can rival synthetic ingredients for overall health support with the highest potency of rare polyphenols available to consumers. With the advantage of an excellent safety profile, our Polyphenol Extract can be trusted as a first-line therapy to prevent and calm the stresses, strains and discomfort of daily life that become hard to manage.

Canurta Pure

Developed using our biosynthesis platform, Canurta Pure offers the highest quality of polyphenolic concentrations. Produced both cost-effectively and with consistently high standards, our precise formulation of pure molecules will be used to treat a range of chronic diseases. Ongoing research will validate the therapeutic potential of our botanical solutions as we pursue drug development.

Sustainability Spotlight

From farm to market, sustainability is at the cornerstone of everything that we do. We're firmly anchored in our values including our commitment to ESG principles, as guided by our Sustainability Policy.

Good Health and Well-Being

We strive to reinforce Grimsby’s leadership in access to healthcare for both people and animals by offering safe, effective and affordable ingredients. Our ingredients are designed for everyone, whether you're living with a chronic disease or interested in preventative care. Unlike standard-of-care treatments, our ingredients have a superior safety profile while also being nonaddictive to address the growing crisis around drug dependence.

Regenerative Agriculture

Regenerative agriculture is about conserving, rehabilitating and strengthening farming systems. Our farming activities — whether that’s growing soy, winter wheat, alfalfa or other grain crops — are conducted following our Sustainable Farming Framework which covers everything from soil, water and energy conservation to biodiversity and pollinator protection. We'll continue to preserve the adjacent wetlands and contribute to terra enhancement via native plants and xeriscaping techniques. By working with and respecting our natural ecosystems, we can ensure vital flora and fauna biologies continue to thrive.

Zero-Waste Manufacturing

Taking a circular economy approach to our business means we can minimize, repurpose and reuse many of our key inputs to ensure sustainable growth. Our technologies allow us to make use of all plant material components including upcycling of waste biomass. Creating value through repurposing biomass material, which is often disregarded as waste or underutilized, will provide additional opportunities to the growing agri-food industry in Grimsby and across Canada. We’re also committed to using recyclable or biodegradable packaging materials to reduce reliance on single-use plastics which can have devastating and long-term impacts on natural environments.

Local Economic Development

Local is best. We’re excited to join the network of businesses that contribute to the financial sustainability of Grimsby and to create opportunities for community members. We work with local farmers to provide supplementary revenue streams while also giving preference to SMEs to boost domestic economies. We're strong advocates of recruiting members of underrepresented groups including newcomers, women and youth and showcasing the diverse career opportunities available close to home. By growing locally, we can advance innovation in Grimsby, together.

The Healing Project

We love building with our team, but wouldn’t it be impressive if the next big healthcare solution was developed by our communities?

The Healing Project (THP) positions Canurta as a leader in the future of healthcare discovery and invites a diverse array of stakeholders, including public and patient communities, to join us. THP members are granted lifetime access to exclusive perks which include collaborating and voting on which products are brought to market; participating in cross-departmental projects and working groups; and nominating and selecting an annual charitable cause of choice to receive 1% of revenues.

Through THP, we remain fully accountable to a forward-thinking community, allowing for credibility and an ongoing culture of incentivizing the most important end goals that promote longevity and a better quality of life for humans and animals alike. THP will accelerate fundraising and the building of our community-driven health ecosystem and improve interactions between researchers, patient communities and the public to democratize business development and provide a new business model rooted in transparency.
