Cartilage damage is difficult to reverse, making early protection an important goal in joint health research. A new Canurta-supported study found that a hemp polyphenol extract rich in flavonoids may reduce inflammatory markers, support pro-resolving pathways, and help preserve cartilage structure in a laboratory model using porcine cartilage.


How the Study Worked


Researchers at the University of Guelph tested a hemp polyphenol extract made using Canurta’s patented process. The extract contained several bioactive compounds, including flavonoids cannflavin A and cannflavin B, cannabidiol (CBD), and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA).


To better mimic oral use, the team applied a simulated digestion and liver metabolism process before testing the extract on pig cartilage samples. This provided a more realistic view of how its active compounds might change after digestion and first pass metabolism.


Across two trials involving explant cartilage from 21 pigs, researchers tested several concentrations and measured:


  • Prostaglandin E2 and nitric oxide, two markers linked to inflammation 

  • Resolvin D1, a   pro-resolving molecule that helps bring inflammation to an end 

  • Loss and retention of glycosaminoglycans, which help cartilage maintain its structure 

  • Cartilage cell viability 


What the Researchers Found


The strongest response appeared at 12.2 milligrams per millilitre, where the combined extract lowered two markers linked to inflammation and increased resolvin D1, which helps bring inflammation to an end.


Cartilage retained more of its structural material, while more than 99% of cells remained viable. The highest dose caused cell stress, confirming that the right concentration matters.


Because the researchers tested the complete extract, the results cannot be linked to one compound alone. The study suggests CBD and CBDA were likely major contributors after simulated digestion, while the roles of cannflavins A and B require further study.


What Comes Next


This was an in vitro study using porcine cartilage samples, not a clinical trial. It does not prove that the extract can prevent or treat arthritis in people or animals. One inflammatory challenge used in the second trial also did not produce the expected response, limiting some conclusions.


Even with these limits, the study provides a valuable foundation for further research. It supports continued investigation into how hemp compounds may act across several connected processes involved in cartilage health, including inflammatory signaling, resolution pathways, and matrix turnover.


For Canurta, the findings reflect a broader approach: study complex botanical compounds carefully, identify how they act across multiple pathways, and build the evidence needed to guide future development.
